Using Google Reviews to Develop Digital Literacy and Argumentative Writing Approaches

This lesson comes to us from Timothy Berrigan, Literacy Advisor in Adult Learning at the Brooklyn Public Library. As Timothy writes in his lesson introduction, writing prompts on the HSE are summative assessments, not introductory activities. Our students need an introduction to writing arguments that allows them to develop the different skills that make up an argumentative essay.

In this lesson, students use Google Reviews to move from informal arguments to formal arguments, developing a rubric along the way. Students read Google Reviews, identify key elements in persuasive writing, write drafts, and eventually publish their own reviews.

The Google Slides document linked above includes an introduction and explanation of the complete lesson. The second URL is for a LINCS discussion in which Timothy explains the project.
