For this problem from Illustrative Mathematics, students analyze a chart with data on the passengers on the Titanic, looking at the survival rates for first, second, and third class passengers.

The core question is whether all passengers aboard the Titanic had the same probability of surviving. Students are asked to support their answer using appropriate probability calculations. Different versions are offered, each with different amount of scaffold – Task 1 has the most and Task 3 is the most open-ended.

Task 1: http://tasks.illustrativemathematics.org/content-standards/HSS/CP/A/4/tasks/949

Task 2: http://tasks.illustrativemathematics.org/content-standards/HSS/CP/A/4/tasks/950

Task 3: http://tasks.illustrativemathematics.org/content-standards/HSS/CP/A/4/tasks/951

Note that the data is the same for all three tasks, though Task 3 includes more information, such as gender of the passengers and children.
