Pre-HSE and Upper-Level ESL Adaptation: Technology in the Workplace

I am thrilled to post our first guest adaptation of a CareerKit activity! Kate Brandt, ELA professional developer in CUNY’s Adult Literacy Programs and Melissa Valerie, Adult Literacy instructor at CUNY’s Borough of Manhattan Community College adapted the Technology in the Workplace activity, part of Unit 1 in all CareerKits.

Many students have questions and fears about the impact technology will have on their job prospects. Will they lose their job to a robot? Will they need programming skills to do most jobs? Technology impacts all sectors, though its effect varies by occupation. Some jobs have been eliminated due to automation, while others have been created because of it.

Kate and Melissa adapted the original CareerKit text on this topic for lower levels and created step-by-step instructions around summarizing the text, identifying the main idea and supporting details, developing vocabulary and answering TABE-style questions about the text.

Click on the PDF to access the activity. Once you use it with students, write a review of it in the comment box below. Did you make any adaptations? How did students respond?
