Introducing: The NYSED/CUNY CareerKit in Community & Social Services

Did you know …

People with histories of addiction, incarceration and homelessness interested in using their experience to help others are in demand by social service organizations? Peer Specialists use their lived experience combined with professional training to support people struggling with similar circumstances. Queensborough Community College has a new program training people to become recovery peer advocates. The CareerKit in Community and Social Services describes many career paths in the helping professions.

The CareerKit in Community & Social Services includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, computation and critical thinking activities that introduce students to careers in the social services, such as Disability Care Aides and community services, such as Barbers and Firefighters.

It includes a series of activities on becoming an entrepreneur, including narratives by successful small business owners. Many students dream of opening their own businesses. New York City and State offer many services, including free courses, to help New Yorkers turn their business dreams into reality. The CareerKits show students how to use New York City’s Office of Small Business Services to identify the steps in becoming an entrepreneur.
