2023 Voter Engagement Resources for Adult Literacy Programs

The 2023 New York City Primary Elections are here! Early voting has started and the final day to vote is June 27th, 2023! All 51 City Council seats, plus some District Attorney and judicial races, are on the ballot this year.

The Literacy Assistance Center (LAC) has partnered with Community Votes and a group of nonprofit adult literacy education programs to integrate voter engagement into their ongoing programs. Nonpartisan voter education, outreach, registration, and get-out-the-vote (GOTV) activities are opportunities to engage students and community members around the upcoming elections. Voter engagement not only encourages students to vote, but also to reach members of their communities to vote on Election Day.

In May, the LAC and the NY Civic Engagement Table (NYCET) hosted a Teach-In on the 2023 NYC Elections geared for adult education program staff, where we covered why primary elections matter, what’s on the ballot, who is on the ballot, primary voting eligibility, resources for researching candidates, and much more.

You can use the Voter Lookup tool to find information about your voting eligibility, registration, absentee ballot status, and nearest poll site. There is also a Sample Ballot tool which shows you what and who will be on the ballot where you live. The LAC has compiled a Resource Folder with resources for teachers and staff who want to engage students in this year’s NYC Elections.

The NYC Primary Elections offer a great opportunity to share voting information and engage your students in conversations about voting and civic participation. The LAC is continuing to partner with organizations to provide tools, resources, and support for programs interested in nonpartisan voter engagement.
